This information may not be important to all looking to purchase a diamond but for the vast majority a diamond grading report ensures the diamond they are purchasing matches the diamond specifications they are paying for.
For the most part diamond grading reports usually only come with diamonds a quarter carat weight, 0.25ct, and above.
Just like finger prints all natural diamonds have natural characteristics. These characteristics are usually described as flaws or inclusions and each and every diamond is different. A report will map out the inclusions showing you exactly how many, what type and where any flaws are located on a diamond.
There are many different laboratories who grade diamonds and unfortunately they do not all work to the same or even similar guiding principles. A diamond that has been graded as an F in colour by EGL, the European Gemmological Institute, may only be graded as an H or even I by GIA, the Gemmological Institute of America.
Anyone who works in the diamond trade knows that GIA have the highest standards when grading diamonds and all reputable jewellers will be able to supply you diamonds with GIA grading reports.
Buying diamonds with GIA grading reports also allows you to be certain that the diamond has not been enhanced in any way e.g. fracture filling – a process where a diamonds inclusion is injected with a resin which makes the diamond clarity grade appear to go from I2 – Si1. As this process is completely reversible by immersing the enhanced diamond in hot water or even exposing it to strong sunlight I wholeheartedly do not ever recommend purchasing enhanced diamonds.
We only sell diamonds graded by GIA, and further still only those graded as a very good or excellent cut. Our clients have exacting standards and by supplying GIA graded diamonds we are meeting or, for the most part, exceeding their expectations about the diamond they are purchasing.
