But it doesn't have to be! Knowing what to ask a jeweller can actually help to make this a great shopping experience where you can make an informed and educated purchase.
1. What are this diamond’s 4Cs? Can I see an independent grading report?
A good jeweller will be able to confidently explain to you a diamond’s 4Cs in detail. And if you are looking to purchase a diamond over a quarter carat weight (definitely over a half carat) produce an independent diamond grading report to support the diamonds specifications. An unbiased diamond grading report, such as the GIA Diamond Dossier®, GIA Diamond Grading Report, or GIA Diamond eReport, ensures that you will know your diamond’s quality and authenticity.
2. Can I see other options in my price range?
Do shop around! Many factors contribute to how a piece of jewellery is priced: the type of gemstone(s) used and it’s quality, the type and quality of the metal in the setting, overall design and craftsmanship, just to name a few.
Looking at a few different options will give you a better idea of what is priced well and what is not! Trying on different designs will let you know which ring type suits you or your partners finger best. If you are buying a significant diamond of over a half carat always insist on an independent diamond grading report.
3. How do I take care of this piece?
Wear-a-bility and care are important considerations. If the ring has a lot of smaller diamonds in surround and down the band you need to be aware of the on-going maintenance necessary. If the piece includes gemstones other than diamond, be sure to find out where they rank on the Mohs scale, which represents gemstone hardness. Ask your jeweller to explain the metal used – some metals are more durable than others. And be sure you know whether the gemstone has been treated, since treated gemstones will require special care. Whether you’re looking for an everyday or special occasion piece, it’s important to understand the care and cleaning tips for any jewellery items you purchase.
4. What is your return policy?
While some couples choose a ring together, sometimes a partner wishes the gift to be a complete surprise. If this is the case speak to the jeweller before you purchase and let them know your plans. That you are surprising your partner and would like to know that if all does not go to plan you have the option to exchange the ring for one she likes better or to adjust the ring slightly to achieve the perfect outcome for everyone. Most reputable jewellers will understand and be able to offer you an exchange policy.
5. Is it safe to purchase a diamond on-line?
This question depends wholly on the laws in your specific country. In New Zealand where our business is based on-line jewellers are subject to the exact same consumer laws as those with retail locations are. We specifically only sell GIA certified diamonds, we do so because then our clients can feel assured the exact diamond they are looking at on-line is the one they will receive at their door. We also offer to meet clients in person if they would prefer this method of choosing their diamond.
The best advise I can offer is for you to do as much research as you can prior to making your purchase. Watch the GIA videos we have on this page, they are excellent tools which will tell you all about diamonds and what you need to know before you buy one.
Lastly, congratulations! This is an absolutely momentous time in your life, you are buying a diamond that is a beautiful representation of the enduring love you have for each other, enjoy the moment!
